Many LGBTQ+ children, young people and adults, face challenges that can manifest in different ways in thier lives, and every person’s experience is different.
Having a safe and supportive space to explore gender identity and/or sexuality is essential for all LGBTQ+ people, regardless of age or circumstance. I have nine years of experience in supporting LGBTQ+ people on a 1-1 basis. I am not a qualified counsellor (although I do possess basic counselling skills gained through my previous work with the Samaritans), and my LGBTQ+ Support and Advice Service is not therapy. However, it is a space to provide an active listening ear, validation, acceptance and advice where appropriate.
LGBTQ+ support and advice
LGBTQ+ people who access my 1-1 Support and Advice Service, often want someone to truly see and hear them for who they are and how they are feeling. For example, 1-1 clients may seek advice and support around the following themes:
- Disclosure of identity or feelings for the first time
- Disclosure of identity to others, in particular friends & family
- Social transition
- Medical transition
- Gender expression alongside gender identity
- Acceptance or lack of acceptance
- Uncertainty about which label or identity is right for them
- ‘Fitting in’ – both in mainstream society & within the LGBTQ+ community
- Lack of confidence & low self-esteem
- Uncertainty about themselves, people’s reactions & the future
I offer my LGBTQ+ Support and Advice Service both to private individuals, to organisations who feel that their employees will benefit from specialist support, and also in educational settings, for learners, students and employees who are LGBTQ+ or who may also be questioning their gender and/or sexuality.
